Holy shit, I haven't seen this ad in years. Growing up, one of my friends parents had a Volksiebus. Wasn't a Syncro though, that's what the 110 County was for.

I had to watch the ad several times just to make sure it was real.

I'm traveling to South Africa, Namibia, and Botswana next summer, and if don't get to thrash a Series Land Rover of some kind through the Kalahari at some point, I'm going to be exceptionally disappointed.

If you're going to be in and around the Cape, I highly recommend Langebaan and Fish Hoek. Two great little towns.

Awesome - we'll be in Cape Town for 10 days or so (my wife has a conference, I get to have a vacation!). We're hoping to explore around the area, so thanks for the tips. We can't wait, it looks beautiful.

Remember that the seasons are switched so if you're going next summer then it will be winter in the Cape which can be rainy and a bit dreary so pack accordingly.

Right - we've also had several people I might describe as "hysterical" tell us that we'll probably get murdered because SA is super violent. Don't drive a car by yourself, don't walk around at night, etc.

We've traveled a lot of places that are theoretically "dangerous" (Middle East, India, Central Asia), but we've never heard so many warnings than when we told folks we were going to South Africa. I'm disinclined to believe it, based on everything I've read, especially about Cape Town. One of those people is a friend of ours who used to live in Durban for a short while, and she claimed she was terrified 24/7 when she lived there, she lived in a secure, gated suburb with 24 hour security, etc. But she's also a worrier by nature.

Do we need to be any more vigilant than we otherwise would be in any foreign country?

I would say yes, Cape Town is a lot safer than Durban however it doesn't hurt to be vigilant. I'm a Durban native and it's definitely not as safe as it used to be but that being said if you stick to the more well trafficked tourist areas and don't act like a dumb tourist you should be fine.

If you want to go visit a Township like Khayelitsha, book a tour and go with a group. I wouldn't suggest going by yourself, also the Cape Flats are pretty shady (like Camden, NJ shady) but downtown Cape Town isn't bad.

You should be fine on Table mountain if you want to hike because I believe they've increased Rangers (or if you're lazy like me just take the cable car up).

Overall Cape Town is a lot safer than the rest of the country because it's not run by the ANC and the people in Government actually can rub two braincells together. I'd still advise caution, but there aren't muggers hiding behind every corner waiting to slit your throat and take your wallet.
